Hartlebury Castle, Hartlebury

This is a replica of the double horizontal dial DH-74, which was undated but signed by John Dougharty (1677-1755). The original maker’s name is in the north centre, and at the south is the coat of arms of the Bishop of Worcester, quartered with the arms of Bishop Hough, which dates the dial to 1717-1743. The original is held at the castle. The replica is intended to be installed on the original pedestal on the castle terrace. The project was led by Vsevolod Buravchenko of the Master Terebrus unit that made the dial,, working with John Davis as cansultant. The dial shows hours IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, read from the inside, with a noon gap, divided to minutes in wide vernier scales outside the chapter ring, the minutes numbered in fives in Arabic. In the centre is a 32-point compass rose, labelled to NEbN etc, from SW clockwise round to SE only. In addition to the normal stereo-graphic projection, tables show the equation of time, a lunar time conversion scale, and a scale of seasonal declinations, and there is a wind-rose.
