BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
An up-turned anchor supplies the gnomon for this dial, marked out on the top surface of a sculpted bronze truncated pyramid mounted on a cuboid black stone base. The hours are Arabic numerals, aligned to the hour lines but read from the north, the time being read from the centre of the shadow of the anchor shaft. The dial is inscribed ’TEMPUS FUGIT’ and ’Doubleday me fecit’. The theme of the sculpture is the River Blackwater which flows below the churchyard. Each side of the pyramid depicts the wildlife of the river from its source to the sea. The face showing the mouth of the river also includes the Chapel of St Peter at Bradwell.
