BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Gwynedd Area

This large heavy dial is made of slate from the Penrhyn Quarry at Bethesda, and is mounted on a tapering octagonal section pillar on an octagonal base. The dial plate is signed at the south ’D Wilson / fecit’, and above that is ’Lat 53 18’ (the approximate latitude of Bangor, Gwynedd). In the centre is a 32-point compass rose labelled to 8 points (N, NE etc). The hour numerals are IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, read from the inside, with a noon gap and divided to 5, 15 and 30 minutes by tick marks. The spandrels outside the chapter ring are filled with leaf decoration. The gnomon is iron, but is currently (2024) painted gold. The design is of a hollow triangle with inward-curved north edge, filled with a hollow bud shape with curling and straighter branchlets to either side. Compare SRN 0787 at Parham House, also by D Wilson, but the Parham gnomon may be a modern copy based on this one.
