BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Dorset

These are the remains of a sundial that was built into the south wall of the Old School Room (formerly the School House dining room). They were found when the OSR was being rebuilt in 1886, and are now held in the School Archives. The dial probably had the motto ’Ut Umbra Sic Vita’, above the date ’1635’. It was the work of Reynold Gillard, and the cost was recorded as £1 for the dial, 1/- for the iron style and 2d for ‘one to hold upp the ladder’. Ref: A.B. Gourlay ’A History of Sherborne School’ (1971).
