BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Devon

This is one of Barker’s Horizontal Floral Sun-Dials, as illustrated on page 8 of their catalogue ’Sun-Dials and Pedestals’, but with the space at the south inscribed ’PEACE / SIGNED WITH GERMANY / JUNE 28TH 1919 / AT VERSAILLES’. It stands on a slate disc mounted on a slender cast iron pedestal. The dial plate is brass with a reddish finish, probably having been ’bronze patinated’ by Barkers. It shows aligned hours IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, read from the outside, with a noon gap and divided to 30, 15 and 5 minutes. At the centre is a 16-point compass rose, labelled to NNE etc. Next is a ring showing the Equation of Time in 12 monthly tables, interspersed with illustrations of seasonal flowers. The substantial gnomon has a three-lobed cut-out and is set at 52°. Ref: Bulletin article, date to be advised.
