BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Tyne & Wear

The dial is octagonal, with a fixing hole in each of the eight corners, and the gnomon lined up to the corners, not, as is more common, to the mid-points of the flat sides. At the south, read from the north, is the motto ’VT HORA SIC VITA’, starting further than it should to the right of VIII pm, so that it ends tigh against IIII am. Below that is ’I Mann Fecit 87’, and below that, ’Lat 54°’. Across the substantial gnomon is inscribed ’I L’. The dial uses hour numerals IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, with a noon gap, divided to 30, 15 and 7.5 minutes. Ref: BSS Bulletin 32(ii), June 2020, pp 2-7. Compare SRN 0256 also by Mann.
