BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Dorset

The dial uses hour numerals IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, read from the outside, and divided to 30, 15 and 7.5 minutes inside the chapter ring, and to 2 minutes outside, marked in Arabic at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. There is a 16-point compass rose, labelled to 8 points (NE etc). To the south of the gnomon is the widely used verse ’[Serene] I stand among the flowers / [I only] count life’s sunny hours / [for me dark] days do not exist / [I’m a brazen] faced old optimist’. There is a substantial iron gnomon with ’S’ support.
