BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Bute Park, Cardiff

The dial was located in the Park in 1990 after a Festival of Iron event and removed in 2006. The present location is not known. It is formed probably of Corten steel, with all the furniture in relief. It comprises an equatorial dial above, and a vertical south below. Across the top is ’CARDIFF CAERDYDD / GMT’, then the Arabic hour numerals set out in three rows as ’12 / 6 8 10 2 4 6 / 7 9 11 1 3 5’, with ticks below serving for hour lines. The vertical dial is laid out for 8am to 4pm GMT, but all the numerals are advanced by eight hours, with ’4PM’ at the left and ’12’ (midnight) at the right. The dial thereby shows the time at a location 120° east of Greenwich, such as Beijing, and some characters which could be Chinese appear below the ’12’. More information requested.
