Loch Lomond, Gartocharn

The dial is designed to represent the annual migration of Greenland White-fronted Geese between Greenland and Scotland. It was designed by Hannah Imlach and is located at the RSPB reserve at Loch Lomond. The circular dial plate is of dark resin-bound gravel, with a double tile surround. The gnomon is formed from two circle-segment plates of Corten steel set with a narrow slot between them which faces north at an angle of 56°. The sheets are pierced with small triangular holes, the sunlight passing through representing flocks of geese. The dial plate shows hour lines for 8am to 4pm, and contains two lighter bands representing seasonal periods. The southern band (bounded by declination curves for 20th March and 10th April) marks the spring migration of the birds to their breeding grounds in Greenland. The northern band (bounded by curves for 5th and 26th October), as in the third picture, tells of their flight back to the loch in the autumn.
