BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Devon

The dial in the back garden commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The upper aeroplane is a Mk1 Spitfire, the middle is a Mk5, and the lower is a Hurricane. The times shown are hours to sunset (red lines), hours since first light (white), and Zulu (GMT) time (blue), indicated by the shadow of the starboard tailplane in each case. The quotation ’Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth . . .’ is from a sonnet written by the 19 year old Spitfire pilot John Gillespie Magee shortly before his death in 1941.
