BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Cragside [NT] (2), Rothbury

This is a replacement for an earlier dial (SRN 6394) on the same pedestal, in the formal garden. It marks the retirement of head gardener Andrew Sawyer. Cragside is the former home of Lord Armstrong, and the gnomon is in the form of a ’trebuchet’ that he designed for his personal use. The motto inside the chapter ring is ’FORTIS IN ARMIS, FORTIS IN HORTIS’ (Strength in arms, strength in horticulture). At the south is ’WG / 1863 1991 / MAS’ . The dial shows hours IV - XII - IV - VIII, read from the inside, with a noon gap, divided to 30, 15 and 5 minutes, with full length hour lines and short half-hour marks terminating in a flower motif taken from cutlery preserved at Cragside (as is the ’A’ in ’MAS’).
