BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Bedfordshire

The dial is signed at the south ’John Underwood & Son / 74 Baker St / London’ and below is marked ’17-11’ but the significance of this code is not known. The dial is a version of Barkers’ Antique pattern and features in their 1907 catalogue. The gnomon is a poor replacement, too narrow and too far north. The inscription around the perimeter is ’Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore: / So do our minutes hasten to their end’ (Sonnet LX, W Shapespeare). The dial uses Art Deco Arabic numerals for 4am to 8pm, read from the outside, with a noon gap, and divided to 30, 15 and 5 minutes.
