The Waterways (1), Great Yarmouth

One of a pair of dials, with identical dial plates (apart from the inscriptions), made and installed as part of the restoration of the Boating Lake and Venetian Waterways in 2018-19. This dial is on an island near the south end of The Venetian Waterways. Although the dialplate is new, the pedestal appears to be original, and is in its original position. The dial is inscribed ’It is good people who make good places’ from Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, who was born in Great Yarmouth. It has hour numerals V - XII - IV - VII, read from inside and divided to 30, 15 and 5 minutes, with a noon gap. At the centre is a decorated 8-point compass rose labelled to NE etc (missing N and S covered by the gnomon), and there is an anticlockwise EoT ring. The pedestal is a cylindrical shaft with 3650 mm diameter capital from late 1920s. Height approx 9400 mm. An inscription on the SW side reads ’Love Gilds The Hours / Unfolds The Flowers / Of Passing Days / Where Love Is All / No Shadows Fall / The Sunshine Stays’, by Richard |Sheridan.
