The Old Parsonage, Didsbury

The dial is at the top of a south-western bow window. It is a reconstruction of an original of 1904 or 1905, which went missing some time before WWII. The design is based on archive photographic evidence, with two main alterations. The original painted glass between the hour lines is replaced by sand-blasted clear glass, to improve readability; and the gnomon is attached magnetically, for prevention of any damage, should it be maltreated. In place of the commonly-used image of a fly, the design includes, at about 10:15am, a depiction of a worker bee (the symbol of Manchester). Upright Arabic hour numerals are used for 8am to 6pm, in a yellow seven-sector chapter ring, with short half and quarter hour lines. Full hour lines run to a yellow-bordered red half sun, and the area around the chapter ring is filled with formal five-petalled rose flowers and green leaves on a blue ground. The design was by John Carmichael and the glass was from Pendle Stained Glass Ltd, Burnley. The dial was submitted to the 2020 BSS Sundial Design And Restoration Awards.
