BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
This break-arch dial is embedded in the street wall above the door of the cottage, and declines approximately 35° west. In the arch is the motto ’Time flys, Death hastes – a Moment / may be wishd / when Worlds want / Wealth to / buy’, adapted from ’The Complaint’ by Edward Young. The upright hour numerals are VIII - XII - IV - VII, divided to half and quarter hours on the inner edge of the chapter ring, with short half-hour lines terminated by triple dots. The plate gnomon has decorative piercing, and a triple semicircle round the root.
A date stone on the wall above the dial reads ’OCEAN COTTAGE 1863’.
