BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

The Old Smithy, Marske

The dial is above a window in the gable of the south end wall of the building, with an arched pediment above and small shelf support below. At the head of the window beneath is a keystone engraved ’JTDH / 1907’, possibly referring to the date of the dial and one of the Hutton family. The dial is very worn but had a motto at the top starting ’Tem …’, probably ’Tempus Fugit’. There is a small crescent moon at the left. The numerals are Roman, upright but slanted to align with the hour lines, and are for 8am to 5pm with ’+’ for noon and IV for 4pm. The iron bar gnomon has a crossed support reminiscent of compasses.
