BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Castlemartyr Market House, Castlemartyr

The dial is in a yellow brick surround, projecting above the roof eaves at the central window. Eroded by the passage of time it still bears the date - 1754 - and traces of the quarter, half and hour lines with Roman numerals marking the hours. Market House was built by Henry Boyle, a prominent Irish politician, c. 1754. One of his ancestors was Charles Boyle, 4th Earl of Orrery, and in 1712, under his patronage, John Rowley created the first mechanical model of the solar system. The device was named the orrery in the Earl’s honour. Ref: Michael Harley, www.sundials-ireland.com
