BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
The dial is in the garden. It has an 8 point compass rose with a fleur-de-lys indicating the north point and shows the time from 4am to 8pm in Roman numerals, using IIII for 4pm, with 15 minute divisions. There is a ’noon gap’ to compensate for the thickness of the elaborately pierced gnomon. Engraved in a cartouche is ’51° 54’ ’ surrounded by ’LATITUDE OF CORK’ and in another cartouche ’ A PYNE ESQ BALLYVOLANE’. ’A PYNE’ is thought to refer to Arthur Pyne who was the owner of Ballyvolane in the early nineteenth century.
