BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Slieve Russell Hotel, Ballyconnell

The 300 acre hotel is on the N87 near Ballyconnell, and the dial is in the garden. The base is engraved with an eight point compass rose labelled to NE etc. The shadow cast by the rod gnomon onto the hour band indicates local solar time with Roman hour numerals and half-hour marks. The Latin motto ’Hora Quasi Umbra’ on the hour band translates as ’Time is but a shadow’. Ref: Michael Harley, www.sundials-ireland.com
