Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Hampshire

The dial stands at the end of the croquet lawn. It was delineated by Sir Mark Lennox-Boyd and engraved and constructed by Ben Jones in Burlington Cumbrian green slate. It is 2300mm high, in all with six faces, including two dial faces set apart 60 degrees. The dial faces have 10 date curves and on two of the three short faces corresponding corrections in minutes, red for minutes to be subtracted. The illustrated face is for days shorter – see triangle pointing down. The other short face, not shown, is for days longer. The motto down the narrow south face is ’LUX ET UMBRA VICISSIM SED SEMPER AMOR’ (Light and Shadow by turns but love always), number 687 in Gatty. Another short face bears the names of the owners and their children.
