BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Somerset

The dial will be located in the garden at the south end of the property, but it is not yet mounted. It is made of Welsh blue-black slate with a brass gnomon. Seasonal date curves, labelled. Noon as gilt cross. Half-hours as gilt dots Hour numerals gilt. LUCE ET LABORE, LXXX, owner’s initials JHN as monogram all to S of gnomon. Shaped plane sunburst. Inscription round the vertical perimeter ’God Almighty first Planted a Garden / And indeed it is the Purest of Humane Pleasures / It is the Greatest Refreshment / to the Spirits of Man’ Francis Bacon. Arabic numerals for 6am, 9am, 3pm and 6pm, with a Greek cross for noon. To the south of the gnomon is an EoT graph.
