BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Deanbrae House, Dean

This is a cube dial built onto the corner of a building, just below gutter level, at the west end of Bells Brae, at the junction with Queensferry Street. It partly covers the vertical dial SRN 8021. The three faces are roughly SW, SE and NE, and all use upright Roman hour numerals. The SE face has a gnomon at about 10 am, and a motto across the top, ’ . . . . FVGIO’. The SW dial has possibly a star at the top left corner. The NE has a flaming sun around the gnomon root, and a fly motif nearby (commoner on stained glass dials than on stone ones!). It also bears a five-pointed star. Across the bottom is a motto, possibly ’SOLE ORIENTE TENEBRAE RESURGIUNT’ (the sun arising, the shadows flee).
