St Andrew’s Church, Chippenham

The dial is set into the stonework, high up and just below the crenellations, at the SW corner of the Baptistry (the south nave chapel). The upright hour numerals V - XII - IIII are painted-in with red. There are full length hour lines and half and quarter hour divisions. The iron bar gnomon has a straight horizontal support strut, with a tab half way along on the upper side. The gnomon has a notch near the tip, too far along to be used as a nodus, and is off-set by two hours, implying a declination of about 24 degrees east. The date 1705 is inscribed centrally below the gnomon support. In the bottom left and right corners are ’Sam’ and ’Guise’ in fairly bold lettering, possibly the maker. Just discernible at the upper right hand corner, inscribed in the stone-work surround, is ’W.S’.
