BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Sports Ground, Melton Mowbray

The sports ground is on the opposite side of the A607 road, to Wilton park. The dial stands on a stone-work ’drum’ plinth at the centre of a brick paved area. Eight stone seats are labelled with the compass points (N, NE etc). The dial plate is in the form of a cog wheel, reflected in the gnomon support. It shows BST hours in Arabic numerals for 6am to 8pm, with a split noon, and hour lines, and 30, 10 and 2 minute divisions. There is a 16-point compass rose / flaming sun at the centre. The dial plate is inscribed ’Service Above Self / Rotary Club of Melton Mowbray / 75 years of service to the Community, March 2003’. Against the plinth a stainless steel plate gives instructions for use, with an EOT correction graph.
