Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Sussex (E)

This cross dial stands in the churchyard, some 10 metres southeast of the southeast corner of the church. The pedestal is circular sectioned, with Celtic patterning at the upper and lower bulbous features, on a square-stepped base. The limbs of the cross are all 50 x 50 cross section, and the overall slope length is 254. The cross is supported on an octagonal base 254 across flats, with the motto ’Sic Gloria Transit Mundi’. The southern face carries an EOT table for each month, inscribed ’Fast means that the clock should be faster than the dial - Slow, slower’. The hours are marked with Roman numerals throughout, and divided to 30, 15 and 5 minutes. The E side of the major limb shows 3 - 6 and 6 - 9am. The W shows 3 - 6 and 6 - 9pm, and the upper surface of the minor (horizontal) limb shows 9am - 12 noon, and 12 noon to 3pm. The dial is dedicated to Bernard Middleditch and members of his family. Bernard was a House Master at Harrow School, and played soccer for England.
