BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
The dial stands in the Rose Garden on a very light-coloured fossiliferous limestone base; 180cm high standing on a square plinth, flush with the garden lawn.
Hours in Roman numerals, read from outside; 4 is IIII; 12 is XII; split noon; 4am to 8pm. The outermost ring marks 5 minute divisions. Inside this is a ring of Arabic numbers for British Summer Time (suggestion of Dr John Davis who also says that this may be one of the earliest dials to show this). Inside this is the chapter ring with Roman numerals. Tables for EoT. 8-point compass rose. Motto ‘I cannot go wrong’ (on the west side of the plate) and ’Heaven is my guide’ (on the east side).
The dial is signed but indistinctly, Several style features point to Francis Barker of Clerkenwell Road.
