BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Quinta do Palheiro, Funchal, Madeira Island

The dial is in the garden, which was laid out by the Blandy family in 1885. It is of good quality and made for the location, with hours running from 7am to 7pm. Aligned numerals using XII and IV are read from the inside and are divided to 30 and 5 minutes. A scale on the inner rim of the chapter ring is labelled ’DST’ and shows times one hour in advance of the main hour scale, using very small Roman numerals. The gnomon is substantial and is supported by a network of branched curves. There is a curved EOT graph at the S, and the maker’s name ’Brookbrae London’. The circular sectioned marble pedestal has an octagonal base and top. It is baluster shaped, with spiral curves on the bulge and acanthus decoration to the neck.
