BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

50, High Street, Peebles

This large square sandstone coloured dial is at second floor level, with an open black metal gnomon. The date of 1877 is shown in the four surrounding corners. Inscribed across the top is ’Greenwich Solar Time / Lat 55, 39 Time 12.85m W’, the 12.85 minutes representing the longitude of the dial just over 3 degrees west of Greenwich, with a difference of four minutes per degree. The hour lines are adjusted to include this difference and hence show Greenwich time (before correction for the EOT of course). Local Solar Noon is indicated by a small arrow above the ’XII’ figure. There are Sun face and waxing Moon motifs in the bottom corners, a shooting star motif above the hour lines, and two balls inside a rectangle, possibly representing an hourglass. Compare SRN 8305 at Portobello in Edinburgh, some 30 km north, very likely by the same hand.
