Melbourne Parklands Noon Column, Calke

A Noon Mark in the Melbourne Parklands woodland picnic area. It is about 1/2 mile SW of Staunton Harold Hall. A vertical slit has been cut in the trunk of the tree, 1250mm high by 35 wide, to allow the sun to fall on a line of sandstone slabs at noon. The trunk is set vertically on a circular concrete base about 1750 dia by 320 high. This is No 4 of a set of six similar devices erected by the National Forest Company in Leics, Derbys and Staffs (SRNs 7698 - 7702, and 7272).
