BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Dumfries & Galloway

This dial was originally in the church at Kirkbean, now held privately. Motto ’Cito labitur Helas’. Inscribed ’Robert Palmer fecit’, and the date. Palmer was the schoolmaster at Southwick. He moved to Currie and taught astronomy and navigation among other subjects. Also a keen curler. In the middle: the initials TG - Thomas Grierson ? Who was the minister in Kirkbean from 1824 to 1855. The outer ring bears an inscription from Psalm XIX v 4-5. Zodiac symbols and EOT. Place names ’read clockwise from the bottom’: Canton, Siam, Calcutta, Madras, Bombay, Isle of France, Ispahan, Bagdad, Jerusalem, St Petersburg, Athens, C. G. Hope, Rome, London, Gibraltar, Cork, St Mary’s, C. St Roque, Rio Janeiro, Cayenne, Barbadoes, Quebec, Jamaica, N. Orleans, Acapulco, California.
