BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

High Kirk, Stevenston

The dial is mounted high up, on the sill outside the south window. It can only be seen clearly from inside the church, which is kept locked. It is positioned 180 deg out of alignment. Hour lines, partly obliterated. Upright numerals. Deeply incised: ’D . LANDSBOROUGH / 1811’, but the date of the dial is uncertain. The present church was opened in 1833 and as the date on the dial is 1811, perhaps the dial was made at that time, incorporating the start date of the incumbent. The much-respected Revd David Landsborough (1779-1854) was ordained Minister of Stevenston in September 1811. He was a renowned naturalist and author, and he contributed a remarkably detailed section on Stevenston to the New Statistical Account of 1837. He left the High Kirk during the Disruption of 1843 and became the Free Church minister in Saltcoats.
