BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
There are two rings of concrete hexagons. The outer ring consists of 24 hexagons representing 24 hours; IV (a.m.) to VIII (p.m.) have brass inset Roman numerals to be read from inside. The inner ring contains 29 smaller hexagons whose purpose is decorative only; they are almost contiguous. Of this inner ring, those round noon (IX to III) also have brass inset numerals, the same as their equivalent in the outer ring. There are no hour lines.
On a slight slope. It is actually in the part of the churchyard that has been made into the ’Watt Memorial Garden’ in memory of Doctor Alex Watt (1937-76), ‘devoted friend of the people of Dalry’. The ground is owned and maintained by North Ayrshire Council.
The churchyard is well worth a visit for the interesting inscriptions on the tombstones.
