BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

The stone is in the form of a cuboctahedron, with dials on six faces. The east and west faces carry standard dials for these directions. The upper south face and the lower north have polar dials, while below and above these respectively are equatorial dials for the winter and summer. The dial was commissioned by the Grant family of Ramsbottom in 1823. The Grants were local philanthropists of Scots origins, and were Dickens’ prototypes for the Cheeryble Bros in Nicholas Nickleby. The urn-shaped pedestal with fluted collar was made for the dial in 2009.
