BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Cromwell Street, Stornoway

Hard to know whether to call this architectural piece a sundial. No hours are marked, but the ’gnomon’ is set at 58 degrees, the latitude. The Gaelic inscription on the ‘gnomon’ reads: "A’leth-aithneachadh gach duine air a chuideachd, aithne gun chuimhne, is cuimhne gun aithne". It is from "Air an Aiseig gu Leodhas" by Derick Thomson and it translates as "Half-recognising each by his kin, a knowing-without-remembering, and a remembering-without-knowing". The uplighters are set at the 16 compass points of NNW etc. Lewisian gneiss flags as a surround; elm seating from Lews Castle grounds; stainless steel gnomon.
