A fine octagonal slate dial signed at the south, in the chapter ring, in lettering in relief ’PROUDMAN / MEASHAM’. Aligned numerals IIII - XII - IIII - VII, read from inside. Wide noon gap. Half hours marked with outward pointing fleur-de-lys in the chapter ring; 15 and 5 minute divisions. At the centre a 32-point compass rose labelled to NbE etc. Around that the motto ’MY DAYS ARE LIKE A SHADOW THAT DECLINETH’ (Psalm cii 11). Between that and the chapter ring, 34 cities and other locations are marked, from Nanking at 4am to St Joseph’s at about 7:15pm. At least four fonts are used - caps with and without serifs, and lower case regular and italic. The significance has not yet been established. London is offset to 11:55, approximately correct for the location (should really be closer to 11:54). The gnomon is understood to be the fourth to be used. It has a vertical north edge (rather as for a double horizontal dial) and triangular supports of sheet metal in the vertical plane. One earlier version is known, with apparently a chamfered north edge. It may be that this was used to indicate the sun’s azimuth, but normally in this case the compass rose would have been labelled in the opposite direction. The current gnomon is incorrectly positioned, the toe being to the S of the VI - VI line. The noon gap suggests that the original gnomon was much thicker.
The dial is currently (2012) mounted on a circular cross sectioned pedestal of randomly positioned natural stone.
