St Peter’s Church., Martley

A modern (2008) vertical declining dial made of Forest of Dean sandstone by David Brown is sited on the church tower. It is a memorial dial for Basil Hume whose dates, 1921 - 2000 appear above his initials at the bottom of the lozenge shaped dial plate. Across the middle of the plate is a motto, "To everything there is a season / and a time to every purpose under the sun." There are hour lines marking from 6am to 5pm but no numerals. Instead there are crosses at 9am, noon and 3pm. Half hours are marked by dots. A sunburst surrounds the root of the brass tube gnomon. The dial is 1000mm square.
