BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
This 610mm square bronze horizontal dial in the Princess Margaret Memorial Garden has the inscription along its southern edge ’HRH The Princess Margaret. Born 21 August 1930.’ It shows the hours VI - V divided into halves. There is a single declination line indicating the princess’s birth date, the nodus being the tip of the gnomon. The gnomon is supported by the figure of a lion. On the north side of the square section stone plinth is inscribed ’This garden was opened by Her Majesty The Queen 5 May 2006.’ On the east side is the inscription ’Salus Intrantibus Pax exeuntibus’ with the English translation ’ Greetings to those who enter. Peace to those who leave’ on the west. The garden was designed by Anouska Hempel but it is not known whether she also designed the dial.
