BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Buckinghamshire

16-point compass rose, labelled to SSE etc. Anticlockwise EOT table with Watch Faster, Slower. IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, from outside, with noon gap. Half hours marked with fleur-de-lys and opposing arrow head, and 1/4 and 1/8 hour divisions. Outer ring divided to 5 mins and 1 min, labelled 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. In the chapter ring gap, from the N, a coat of arms with below ’Sol tibi signa dabit’ (the sun will give you signs, from Virgil’s Georgics). At the N, from the S, possibly ’Sole in quid diem a filsum elicat’ [?], and below ’Chas. Butcher, Bedford Fecit Lat 52 10’. In the chapter ring, radially orientated, are some 30 city names, connected with leader-lines to precise noon times. Ornate circular section pedestal on square base, on lawns to the east side of the house. Ref: Jekyll, Garden Ornament, 1918, p 381, which shows a ’double-horizontal’ type of gnomon.
