BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Kent

The dial has 4 mounting holes in corners and one (modern?) hole in the noon gap. There is a central sun face in a circle, engraved to avoid the gnomon. Around that is an 8-point compass rose with alternate ‘feather’ and half-parallel infill, labelled eg to SW. N & S points have a ‘wheatear’ border along the edges. There is a geographic ring with XII for the time of noon at Mexico, Barbadoes, Madera, Jeruſalem, Surat and Pekin. The main chapter ring, extended inwards, has hours IIII-XII-IIII-VIII, the inner ring divided to 1/8 hours, and halves with a simple ‘lily’. The outer ring is divided to 5-mins, the halves marked with ’triple-arrows’. Note: the hourlines for 5pm and 9am are aligned along the edge of the broad strokes of V, X etc. At the south is engraved: ’Thos Hogben Fecit / Surveyor, Smarden * / 17.4 ’ Note: the decade number is completely missing. Restored 2010 by J Davis (Flowton Dials). Ref Article by J Foad in BSS Bull 15(iv) (this dial not included).
