BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
The dial is a replica (with some features conjectural) of the stolen John Whitehurst dial SRN 0612. It is located behind the old house, towards the lake, and is mounted on the original pedestal, a massive octagonal structure.
The engraving is generally outwards, except for the CoA. 6 compass points are shown (N & S are omitted).
There is a ’WATCH FASTER/SLOWER’ EoT scale in two anticlockwise arcs, with months in full, eg JANUARY. The EoT is given to minutes, with extra seconds at max/mins. (This replica uses modern values and the Gregorian calendar. The original may not have had an EoT ring). There is large ’C’ floral engraving in Thomas Wright style at the ends of the arcs, and an oakleaf border.
An inner ring of place-names is set along the hourlines and an outer ring is set in the chapter ring. A narrow ring of XIIs serves both the inner and outer rings. See drawing for the names used - many of which are conjectured as only a few could be read on photos of the original.
The chapter ring uses IIII-XII-VIII, divided to minutes numbered in tens. There is no inner fractional ring or half-hour markers.
At the N of the gnomon is a facsimile ’Whitehurst / DERBY’, and in smaller letters above ’Reproduction by John Davis 2009’.
At the S of the gnomon is a large CoA for the Duke of Newcastle with greyhound supporters and the Garter motto ’LOYAULTE HONTE’.
