Dial in Hereford & Worcester

In the churchyard is a 20th century bronze horizontal dial marked with the latitude 52 21. It show the hours IIII - VIII divided into halves and intervals of 5 minutes. The aligned numerals are read from inside the chapter ring. The gnomon, set at 50°, is broken but the elaborate floral support remains. The dial is 304mm square. The pedestal is 1180 high with a motto round the rim in Gothic lettering, possibly ’Solus (? Solis) et umbra sumus deus hominum deo gratias’ (Alone (? Of the sun) and shade we are; to the God of men thanks be to God.)
