BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Nottingham Castle, Nottingham

War memorial. Originally a good dial, in the Castle grounds at the top of the high walls above Castle Street. The gnomon is now missing and the substantial dial plate has been rubbed smooth by the touch of many fingers. 16-pt compass rose labelled to NNE etc. Anticlockwise EOT circles, now barely legible. In the S gap of the chapter ring there had been an inscription, quite possibly a maker’s name and date, but now illegible. Aligned numerals IIII - XII - IIII - VII. Intervals cannot be discerned. On a squat decorated octagonal stone pillar, on two levels of octagonal stone base. The bases carry brass plaques commemorating the dead of the 17th Battallion, The Sherwood Foresters, in the Great War, with ’They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them’.
