BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Mary’s Church, Smeeth

This is a ’garden centre’ dial, but interesting here as it commemorates the original dial in this location (SRN 0299). That dial was stolen sometime between 1983 and 2000, and the wooden pedestal had deteriorated. The new pedestal carries forward some of the old restoration dates of 1826, 1901 and 1936. In the interior, a pattern of morning glory flowers. The directions N, S, E and W marked with small letters just inside the chapter ring. In the south gap ’morning glory’ in gothic script, flanked by a young crescent moon on the left and an old crescent on the right. Upright Arabic numerals 5 - 12 - 7. The pedestal is a square section oak post, 1000 high, with two long vertical scallops. On the top section N face: ’OW 1826 / EA 1901 / GOD MADE’; W face: ’JM / 1936 / THE SUN’; S face ’SA 1975 / PD 2000 / TO RULE’; E face ’BY DAY’.
