Dial in Hertfordshire

The inscriptions on this dial are (at the toe of the gnomon) ’GEO A NEWTON. WATFORD. A. D. 1923’ and (within the chapter ring) ’LAT 51 39 12 N. LONG 0 23 30 N HEIGHT ABOVE SEA LEVEL 240 FEET’. The gnomon support is shaped as large letter ’N’. Aligned Roman numerals V - XII - IIII - VII are read from outside, with split noon, and hour lines and 30, 15 and 5 minute divisions. There is an eight-point compass rose at centre labelled to NE etc. The plinth is a bulbous ovoid shape, of square cross section with spheres at the top corners supporting a square stone top, engraved around its four edges ’LIGHT OF THE WORLD / DRAW NEAR / WHERE DARKNESS IS / AND FEAR’. The four sides of the plinth also carry inscriptions.
