BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St. Mary the Virgin’s Church, Carlisle

The dial is in the top left hand corner of the south wall. It replaces an earlier dial (SRN 1006), now stored in pieces in the church. The inscription on the plaque above and below the dial are from Busiris V i by Edward Young 1719. Above is ’Time is on the wing / and the moments of life / are too precious to be / squandered away in trifles’. Below is ’Ah, what is human life? / How like the dial’s tardy-moving shade! / Day after day slides from us unperceived / yet soon the hour is up - and we are gone’.
