BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Berkshire

Horizontal memorial dial with an unusual inverse gnomon. This is a mass-produced commercial product, and does not appear to be accurately divided for the latitude of Berkshire. The dial has Roman numerals, read from inside and aligned with the hour lines. There is a noon gap which would be correct with a conventional gnomon but is the inverse of what is needed with this gnomon: there should be a noon overlap. The chapter ring has half and quarter hour divisions inside the hour numbers and 5 minute divisions on an outer ring. There is a compass rose at the gnomon toe, an elaborately engraved sun(?) face at the centre. The mottos are ’Horas non numero nisi serenas’ and ’Make time, save time while time lasts; all time is no time when time is past’. The bottle-shaped pedestal is engraved to Adah Dafforn, d 1930. Note also a fine scratch dial on the chequered wall of the church.
