Dial in Devon

This bronze horizontal dial was reported as being loose on its pedestal in 2005. Round the gnomon root are six petals and there are mottoes which read "VIA VITA" (The Way of Life) and " EHEU FUGACES". The second is part of a quotation from Horace (Odes. Book II. XIV. 1.), "Eheu Fugaces, Postume, Postume, labuntur anni." (Alas! Postumus, Postumus, the fleeting years are slipping by.) Aligned Roman numerals read from inside, IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, with hour lines to small circle around the petals, and half and quarter hour marks. Solid plate gnomon with jaggedly curved vertical edge. The dial which is a 20th century one is 150mm square and is mounted on a 900 mm high eroded circular baluster pedestal with a square top.
