BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Sumburgh Hotel, Sumburgh

Gnomon missing. Was on pedestal in the grounds of the hotel, now kept on the reception desk. Inscribed at S ’John Bruce / of / Sumburgh’, under coat of arms with the motto ’OMN[I]A VINCIT AMO[R]’. (This is apparently a valid alternative to the normal form, and appears thus in Virgil’s Eclogue X.) At N, ’C BAKER 244 High Holborn. London’. At the centre an 8-point compass rose, labelled to NE etc. Then the chapter ring with aligned Roman hour numerals read from outside, IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, with split noon, and half hours marked by short arrows. Then EOT in 17 tables outside the chapter ring. Also in the EOT ring are ’PM add 1 Min’, ’AM sub 1 Min’, ’Edward Miller Nelson del 1890’, and ’Lat 59 52 N / Long 0 5 9 W’ (sic). Ref BSS Bulletin 19(iii) Sept 2007 pp116-7.
