Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

The dial is in the Surprise Garden. Shows BST, longitude corrected. Aligned Roman numerals read from outside, IV - XII - IV - X, with no noon gap (the gnomon is a thin wire). Arabic 10-min marks. 1-mins marked by offset 2-min scales. Half hours marked by lozenge / trident motifs. Anticlockwise outer EOT circle marked to nearest minute of correction for each day of year. Latinised month names. Nodus identifies five declination lines: Tropic of Cancer, date of death of William Cecil, date gardens opened, date of birth of William Cecil and the Equator. The Arctic Circle is marked on a Ritter (gnomonic) projection of the world centred on the dial location and which has each 15 degrees of longitude aligned with the hour lines. Midsummer sunrise and set are marked as is the local meridian (dotted). A meridian line below shows date and zodiac signs, marks the seasons, and indicates the sun’s altitude. Seven sided arched support each marking one day of the week and its planetary names. Plaques on each side give information on the use of the dial. Sunday side contains a vertical slot that is the gnomon for the meridian line. Constructed of Gabbro black rock, with brass gnomon supports and possibly s/s for the gnomon wire. Made by William Andrewes of Concord, Mass, USA, with a serial number of 10. Ref: BSS Bull 20(ii) p60 (June 2008).
