Dial in Devon
This fine 18th century bronze horizontal dial by Thomas Heath of London (fl. 1720-1753) is in the churchyard. It shows the hours IIII - VIII divided into halves by lines decorated with a fleur-de-lys and into quarters. The hours are further subdivided down to one minute by graduations outside the chapter ring. There is a gap at noon to compensate for the width of the gnomon (7.5mm). The maker’s signature appears at the foot of the gnomon while just above the numeral XII is engraved the latitude ’50D 56M’ (a modern value for the site is 56° 31’). There is a sixteen point compass rose marked N, NNE, NE etc. The dial plate is 300mm in diameter. The dial is mounted on a square slab supported by a turned granite pedestal 1143mm high, top 355mm x 355mm.
